Abstract

Urbanization and land conversion have increased in the buffer zones of the future capital of Indonesia. This is threatening local food security, in particular the supply of animal protein. A community service activity was held on April 22, 2026 in Jonggon Village, Kutai Kartanegara, involving 30 participants comprising the District Agriculture and Livestock Service, community chicken farmer groups and residents of the village. The objective was to improve the knowledge and skills of participants on sustainable poultry production and to achieve family food security. The methods used were a field visit to a participant’s chicken coop, pre-test and post-test evaluations, interactive presentations by four experts (food security policy, beef cattle, poultry management and chicken disease control) and distribution of 18–32 laying hens per farmer group as stimulant assistance. The findings showed that mean knowledge scores rose from 54.80 to 83.67, a mean gain of 28.87 points (52.68%; paired t-test, n = 27, p < 0.001). Questionnaire responses indicated that 70-73% of the participants thought the exercise was very good for increasing comprehension and insight. Participants were very satisfied with the field visit and the laying hens provided, reporting direct and practical benefits for egg production. The activity improved short-term knowledge and participant satisfaction. It also strengthened local capacity for poultry-based food security. Direct food-security outcomes, such as sustained egg production and household income, were not yet measured and need follow-up monitoring.
